Unformatted text preview: According to English professor Richard A. Lanham, the elements of life are divided into two categories: substance and style. He defines substance as the elements of life needed for surviving the environment of today, while style represents the fluff people often indulge in todays society. For instance, food to stave off hunber would be considered substance, while a twenty-dollar steak dinner manifests the style in life. Going deeper into the polarity of substance versus style, Professor Lanham utilizes a matrix composed of four different categories to classify the differences between the two words in four categories: signal, perceiver, motive, and life. Lanham refers to signal as the means of demonstrating sound, words, or colors (Lanham 158).
