Laura Hyde Vz101 Chinese Culture: Final Report My interest in China started in high school in World History class when we learned about past Emperors and Empresses and the Peoples’ Republic of China. The Chinese government model was so drastically different than anything that I was familiar with that I became intrigued. As time went on I learned more about China and its many differences from the U.S. Watching the 2008 Beijing Olympics made me realized how incredibly focused and hardworking the Chinese are. That fact that children were picked out of preschool and told that they had to excel in certain sports blew my mind. This idea of making so many people completely specialized in one area from such a young age was interesting to me. Growing up, my parents encouraged me to get into many sports and clubs, but tennis was the main focus. Their mentality was “not to put all your eggs in one basket”, so if tennis didn’t work out for me, I’d have something to fall back on. This mentality is fairly common among American families. It seemed to me that the Chinese had obviously found a system that worked due to the fact that China excelled in what seemed to be most categories in the Olympics. The facilities used during the Olympics were incredible as well. Not only did China have winning athletes, they also have creative and brilliant architects and engineers.
