November 12, 2008 Chapter 2-3 The Articles of Confederation Vocabulary: 1. ratify-to approve 2. unicameral- a single-chamber legislature 3. Cede- to yield 4. ordinance- a law Notes: Articles of confederation- -basically continued the structure and operation of gov as established under the 2 nd Continental Congress -the states wanted a confederation (league of friendship) among the 13 independent states rather than a strong national gov -Under articles- -included unicameral Congress -didn’t include an executive branch or president -no federal court system -each state had 1 vote -every state legislature selected its own representatives, paid them, and could recall them at any time -Congressional Powers- -make war and peace -send and receive ambassadors -enter into treaties -raise and equip a navy -maintain an army by requesting troops from the states -appoint senior military officers -fix standards of weights and measures -regulate Indian affairs -establish post offices -decide certain disputes among the states
