November 23, 2008 Chapter 3-2 3 Branches of Government Vocabulary: 1. Expressed powers-powers directly stated in the Constitution 2. Enumerated powers-the expressed powers of Congress that are itemized and numbered 1-18 in Articles 1, Section 8 of the Constitution 3. Elastic clause-clause in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution that gives congress the right to make all laws “necessary and proper” to carry out the powers expressed in the other clauses of Article 1 4. Federal bureaucracy- departments and agencies of the federal gov-mostly the executive branch Notes: 3 Branches of Government- 1. Legislative Branch- -consists of the Congress-divided into Senate and House of Representatives (Congress-elected by people) (House of Representatives-based on population) -enumerated powers-powers of congress (1-18) -deal with economic legislature (5 powers) -provide for defense (7 powers) -elastic clause-gives Congress the right to make all laws 2. Executive Branch- -vested in the President (serves a Commander in Chief)
