Adam Ball Amcult 262 Prof. Andrea Smith 2/6/08 Response #4 The two pieces, How the West Was Really Won and The Christian Conquest and Sexual Colonization of Native Women , were both very powerful and engaging. How the West Was Really Won I found particularly interesting because it discussed the roles of homosexuals which is something that has not been covered thus far. According the author, in many Native American societies, homosexuals were considered very special people. They were viewed as unique, and often they served important spiritual roles. In The Christian Conquest and Sexual Colonization of Native Women , it was discussed how women were not subjugated as they were in contemporary European society. Women had much more freedom, and could make important decisions that might not have been completely instep with their husbands. But when the European and American colonizers came, all of this changed. In How the West Was Really Won , it was shown how the Europeans, especially the Catholic clergy, were disgusted by the homosexual in Native American society.
