War in the West 06/10/2008 12:25:00 Once Rome solidified their rule in Italy, once they had forged their weapon, they  could not stop using it. 3 great wars with carthage o the punic wars o the second war essentially established Rome as unbeatable wars against the tribes of the Iberian peninsula wars with some smaller peoples in the mountains of Italy 264 BC- the first punic war o carthage had established itself as the leading semitic area, also  rivaling the Greeks o by 350 BC carthage controlled the coast of north Africa, 2/3 of spain,  2/3 of sicily, and Sardinia o almost completely different from Rome derived its well being from commerce, lots of trade all the way  down the coast of Africa strongpoint was the Navy, with citizen sailors, very well trained,  the army on the other hand was mostly mercenaries, almost no  citizens o carthage was led by an oligarchy of rich merchants, they led through  the courts and the senate o Historically Rome and carthage had a good relationship due to  explicitly outlined spheres of influence, rome had italy, the crthaginians  had Africa and the islands Sicily was where the  problems started due to a lack in explicit  boundaries here Group of warriors, the mamertines, got the Carthaginians to  help them win against the king of Syracuse, a greek Once the mamartines took over, they asked the Romans to help
