19/09/2007 09:59:00 Characteristics of the archaic world Cult of the dead Divine kingship o The king was divine or at least sacred o You don’t look him straight in the face, approach in a submissive  manner, do not touch him, or speak unless spoken to o He has to protect the proper worship of the gods o The king is in charge of the architecture of the temples o He was part of the priesthood, but even more special o Jews did not have divine kingship, they didn’t even have kings They were guided by judges they even had women judges o even when the jews had kings, they were not considered divine o the jews considered their god to be their king, and so thought they had  the best king, Samuel said that if they had a human king they would  end up with a tyrant o Polytheism o The belief in the existence of many gods o These flourished everywhere
