ANT 102 9/01 McCurdy “Using Anthropology” -Get textbook October 27 th , midterm 25% December 17 th , 5:15 Tests will be MC, total of 1000 points 1 question based on the syllabus Today Intro to Course What is Anthropology/Cultural Anthropology? -study of people, what makes us human -make, think say or do collectively that is culture Politics, religious ideas, social institutions, customs, rituals (salutingthe flag), games, stories, myths 2.6 million years of human years, anything of human existence and behavior -Sir Edward Tylor defined culture as “that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals law, custom and any other capibilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society” Characteristics of Course How is Culture Collective? -Culture is something as a group and the behavior of people in groups, shared and learned either laterally (from each other) or through the generations -Culture, shared behavior among people in that environment (In Scandavania, bathe in the hot springs and jump into snow bank, that is a culture of scandanavia not the U.S.)
