Outwardpressure applied to the plateby screws force the joints inthe bones of the palate toopen lengthwise, wideningthe palatal area.REMOVABLE RETAINERSworn on the roof of themouth,thesedevicesprevent shifting of the teethto their previous position.They can also be modifiedand used to prevent thumbsucking.HEADGEARwiththisdevice, a strap is placedaround the back of the headand attached to a metal wireinfront,orfacebow.Headgear slows the growthof the upper jaw, and holdsthe back teeth where theyare while the front teeth arepulled back.2
