Department of Economics University of Oregon Economics 370: Money and Banking Winter 2009 Instructor: John Kandrac Office: PLC 455 Telephone: 346-1305 E-mail: [email protected] Lectures: TR 12:00-1:20 DEA 208 Office Hours: Mon 3:30pm – 5:30pm; Wed 2:30pm – 3:30pm; and by appointment Course Description : In this class you will study financial markets, financial instruments, and financial institutions. In the process, you will learn about money, the banking structure, the pricing of financial assets, the determinants of market interest rates, and financial regulation. Select topics in the area of personal and institutional finance are also covered. Text : Frederic S. Mishkin, The Economics of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets , 8 th edition (Addison Wesley: New York, 2006). Articles will supplement certain topics. These may be handed out in class and may also be posted to blackboard. Grading : There will be one midterm, a comprehensive final, and six homework assignments. Your final course grade will be determined as follows: 5% Participation 20% Homework 35% Midterm 40% Final – Wednesday, Mar 18
