ABSTRACT This experiment is to investigate the synthesis of Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA for short) by free radical initiated solution polymerization and find out the effect of reaction time and temperature on the process by comparing the percentage yield of PMMA under different reaction conditions. In the experiment, the monomer methyl methacrylate (MMA for short) is initiated by initiator azobis-[isobutyronitrile] (AIBN), and then forms PMMA via free radical polymerization. However, the experiment cannot be perfect due to some limitations such as time. OBJECTIVE First, the experiment is to observe the free radical reaction of an unsaturated alkene like methyl methacrylate. Second, the experiment is aimed to examine the effect of reaction time on the conversion rate of monomer to polymer, as well as temperature on the initial reaction rate of solution polymerization.
