Drama 115 09/30/09 Life is a Dream more challenging to read, really long monologues example: Chapter 3, Rosaura going on about why she needs Clotaldo’s aid to succeed very simple story compared to MSND action neatly divided into one, two and three o one- imprisonment o two-free will o three- making decisions, compression -> rebellion -> conformity for a modern audience, ending may be unsatisfactory action of act one- o rosaura- traveled from Russia to get revenge on Adolfo o Segismund- chained up Dressed like an animal, scraps, lives beastlike, no codes of conduct or social skills o They have never met but realize they are both prisoners in some respect ACTION o Mirror one character in another- sesismund and rosuaura o Sometimes literal doubling- segismund and rosaura, two protagonist, rapidly connect Threads main plot and subplot come together more quickly o Echoes throughout, sleeping waking motif keep experiencing through the prints Drugged, horoscope wrong?, then experiment doesn’t work, drugged again and wakes up chained again Wondering if experiment was reality or fiction Characters have hard time distinguishing real and unreal o Fake vs. freewill, nature vs. nature, love and honor, truth vs. illusion All explored in play
