CHEM 6BL Experiment 1: Gravimetry Dr. Sandrine Berniolles Experiment 1: Gravimetric Analysis Analytical Chemistry : Fundamental branch of chemistry that involves either: o Identifying the components that make up a compound ( qualitative analysis ) o Determining the specific amount of a compound ( quantitative analysis ) Quantitative Analysis: Gravimetry is the measurement of masses or densities Gravimetric Analysis Methods Two primary ways of gravimetric analysis o Combustion : collect the resulting residues o Precipitation : one component is “crashed out” of solution Experiment #1 involves precipitation o Used to back-calculate concentration of [Al3+] from mass of Aluminum Oxinate (Alq3) Experiment 1 : Precipitating Agent Use of an organic precipitating agent o 8-hydroxyquinolinate (Ox–) 8-hydroxyquinoline(OxH) 8-hydroxyquinolinate(Ox–) Ox– ("Oxinate") is used to precipitate Al3+ Experiment 1 : Alq3 Precipitation Al 3+ (aq) + 3 Ox - (aq) AlOx 3 (s)
