Unformatted text preview: Sexually Transmitted Infections STDs caused by viruses Not considered living organisms not composed of cells can not reproduce on own, must take over the machinery of cell they infect to make more viruses Viruses are composed of a protein coat and internal DNA or RNA Herpes Estimated number with oral herpes is 100 million Number currently infected with genital herpes in US is 45 million - 1 million new cases each year Caused by herpes simplex virus- 2 strains HSV 1 usually causes cold sores or fever blisters - transmitted primarily by kissing HSV 2 usually causes genital lesions transmitted vaginal, anal, or oral genital intercourse, even when no blisters are evident Herpes Both HSV 1 and 2 can and do develop equally in mouth and genitals Enters body through skin and mucous membranes For many men and women initial infection most severe Sometimes only outbreak a person will have Herpes Symptoms 3-20 days after exposure small painful red bumps develop into painful fluid-filled blisters that rupture & form open sores occur on genitals, penis, anus, perineum, vulva, within vagina or mouth possible other symptoms swollen lymph glands in groin fever, muscle aches, headaches urinary burning, vaginal discharge oral bleeding or excess salivation Herpes If recurs , milder & shorter in duration advance warning symptoms of itching, burning, throbbing or tingling Recurring outbreaks usually preceded by stress, fatigue overexposure to cold or sun and certain foods such nuts or citrus Complications of genital herpes increased risk of cervical cancer for women- have annual Pap smear if newborn infected during delivery, may die or suffer severe damage severe eye infection from touching sore then eye Herpes No known cure, but antiviral drug can reduce symptoms and suppress further outbreaks Following can prevent, shorten or reduce severity of outbreaks: rest, balanced diet, aspirin or other pain relievers How do you differentiate between cold sores caused by Herpes simplex virus 1 and canker sores ? cold sores or fever blisters usually caused by Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1). transmitted primarily by kissing but can develop equally in mouth and genitals HSV 1 sores primarily on lips and sometimes within mouth - crust over 10-16 days Exact cause of canker sores is unknown - some may result from prolonged contact with food, or injuries painful shallow sores in lining of mouth, usually inside lips, cheeks, gums Clear up in 1-2 weeks....
