Poverty Indicators Family Income Poverty  (lack of cash income) Absolute poverty :  having less than an objectively  defined absolute minimum required to meet basic  needs for food, clothing, housing  U.S. Federal Poverty Line  Relative poverty :  having less than others in society Typically defined as 50% of the median income in a society  (e.x. the European Poverty Line)
