Urban sociology 9/17 DuBois University of Pennsylvania chapter Tension with the scientific method Observation and empiricism Science shouldn’t have a political agenda but should be used for some type of social reform A priori- before you have any info on the subject (not context for making a hypothesis) Has to do his work in the face of these a priori assumptions that are being given the approval of science Work being done with bias and without attention to detail, wanted to eliminate this His request was not received respectfully, why was he there? Source of racism was lack of knowledge- dominant liberal model Racism based on ignorance He comes with his own biases: Africans have history, “an historical group” Whites thought blacks were uncivilized and therefore had no history Socially constructed, incorporates social environment, not biological bc otherwise there would be no room for change, genetics say we are predetermined moral assumptions Multi-factor study: culture, history, politics
