10/5 SLIDESHOW Meat vs rice (co-authored by Gompers)- whites have a higher standard of living and therefore require a higher wage, not bc they necessarily work harder but bc their bodies require it, their bodies require meat to sustain themselves- deserve a higher wage Asians have a lower standard of living, they require rice to sustain themselves which is cheaper so they get paid less, they’re OK with a lower wage bc all they want is rice- excluded from unions bc thought they’d undercut white workers/won’t want to strike for higher wages Cheap labor- should be called “cheaply paid labor”, value of labor is decided based on body of the person doing it Economic logic: your wage determines what you spend Romanticism of poverty All non-whites seen as scabs or strike-breakers: in reality ppl like Gompers are so exclusionary that minorities have to choose between striking and death- blacks would go on strikes with guns just to ensure a wage Gender dynamic: real labor is masculine labor, feminization of other racial groups
