There will be a review session on May 11 from 5-6 in 100 GPB. LECTURE The Self. The self is the last topic of the course; you may recall that it was a focus for phenomenological perspectives on personality. We will look at cognitive, evaluative and cultural components of the self. Cognitive components are about self schemas, which function much like other schemas. The affective component relates to self esteem. There are also important cultural influences on the self that we will talk about. Cognitive Approaches to the Self. Self schemas are the key to cognitive approaches to the self; they function like other schemas. The self concept is about who we are and who we think we are; it is tied to self awareness and awareness of our thoughts and bodily processes. Self schemas are ways we represent the self; they are data driven, and based in past experience; they drive our information processing about the self. We have schemas about the self that are tied to specific domains; in those domains specific schemas become more accessible, so we process information related to those self schemas more easily in those domains and situations. Accessibility is tied to ease of processing. Social schemas, which are derived from past experience, when activated make it easier to think of behavioral exemplars of the schema; schemas can also profoundly influence future behavior in specific domains where they are activated. If my schemas for femininity or masculinity are activated by domains, I can think of past behaviors that exemplify my gendered self schemas. We are also resistant to counter- schematic information about the self schemas in those domains that activate specific schemas. Gender Schemas. I want to look at a classic study of gender schemas that drove a lot of subsequent research, by Hazel Markus in 1982. The study is about the effect of gender schemas on the accessibility of self schemas and memory. She had 3 types of subjects. I should add that her schemas for masculinity and femininity reflected the state of the culture in the late 1970s; they might not reflect our schemas about gender today.
