Unformatted text preview: LAST LAB!!! Exam 2 Review Session Sunday April 26 nd 7 8 p.m. HELD 107 Door Code 2578 Test #2.100 points!!! Test will be over labs 8-14 (inclusive). Remember the Images website will go off-line the week of the exam (4/27 at 7:30am). Study hard!! Nervous System Exercise #14 Biol. 112 Lab 14 Safety Slide: Goggles and closed-toed shoes are required. Gloves need to be worn when performing dissections. Dispose of used cotton swabs and rinse cups in the biohazard waste container. Do not eat or drink in lab except for the materials required for the taste exercises. Complete the taste exercises BEFORE doing any dissection. Follow general safety precautions and use common sense in addition to these guidelines. Ask your TA if there is doubt about any procedure. MSG is a known allergen!! Nervous System Central Nervous System (CNS)- Brain and spinal cord Peripheral Nervous System Includes sensory and motor neurons Everything else but brain and spinal cord What are nerves anyway? Nerve-bundle of neurons Neuron-a specialized cell that conducts nerve impulses Dendrites-receives messages Soma-cell body, contains nucleus Axon-conducts nerve impulses Synapse-gap between two neurons. Signals are passed between the two cells via neurotransmitters Conduction of an Impulse Nerve impulses conducted from dendrites-->cell body-- >axon Axon is insulated by a myelin sheath (faster electrical conduction) Gaps in myelin sheath called Nodes of Ranvier- electrical impulse skips to each node When the impulse reaches the end of the axon, neurotransmitters are released...
