Unformatted text preview: ME 336 FINAL EXAM, DECEMBER 21, 2004 C. BORGNAKKE, ME DEPT Problem 1 (35 Points) Ethanol, C 2 H 5 OH, is burned in a steady state burner with stoichiometric air at Po, To. The ethanol is flowing, 0.05 kg/s, as a liquid at To to a carburetor where it is mixed with air to produce a fuel air gas mixture at To. The carburetor takes some heat transfer from the hot products to do the heating. The combustion products are used in a heat exchanger which they leave at 1000 K to some other application. 1) How much power is given to the heat engine? 2) What is the product dew point temperature? 3) How high is the adiabatic flame temperature (before heat out to the carburetor)? Problem 2 (30 Points) A flow of moist air at 45 o C, 10% relative humidity at a rate of 0.2 kg/s dry air is mixed with a flow of moist air at 25 o C, and absolute humidity of w = 0.018 with rate of 0.3 kg/s dry air. The mixing takes place in an air duct at 100 kPa and there is no significant heat transfer. After the mixing there is heat transfer to a final temperature of 40 o C. 1) Find the temperature and relative humidity after mixing. 2) Find the rate of heat transfer that takes place and the final relative humidity. Problem 3 (35 Points) A steam turbine in a powerplant receives steam at 3000 kPa, 500 o C. 20% of the flow is extracted at 1000 kPa, 350 C to a feedwater heater and the remainder flows out at 200...
