OCTOBER 10, 2002 C. BORGNAKKE, ME Problem 1 (30 Points) A piston cylinder setup has 2.5 kg of ammonia at 50 kPa and –20C. Now it is heated to 50C at constant pressure through the bottom of the cylinder from hot gases at 200 C. a) Find the heat transfer to the ammonia b) Find the total entropy generation in this process. Problem 2 (40 Points) The power stroke in an internal combustion engine can be approximated with a polytropic expansion. Consider air in a cylinder volume of 0.2 L at 7 MPa, 1800 K which is expanded in a reversible polytropic process with exponent n = 1.5 through a volume ratio of 8:1. a) Show the process in a P-v and T-s diagram. b) Find the work in the process. b) Find the heat transfer in the process? Problem 3 (30 Points) A flow of 2 kg/s saturated vapor R-22 at 500 kPa is heated at constant pressure to 60 o C. The heat is supplied by a heat pump that receives heat from the ambient at 300 K and work input, shown in Fig. P9.35. Assume everything is reversible. a)
