1 Yalta Containment Truman Doctrine NSC-68 Joseph McCarthy I. Development of the Cold War Post WWII growing distrust between U.S. and Soviet Union. With Europe, Russia and Japan in shambles, U.S. sees itself as the country to provide help and stability. They want to make other countries like the U.S. with a open political system and capitalist economy. Soviet Union is the main competitor, they want security from neighbors. They have been invaded twice. The U.S. believe that if they don’t spread their vision, Soviet Union will spread theirs. II. WWII’s contribution to post war Cold War Post WWII the U.S. is at a heightened level of paranoia. Many European countries are destroyed, while U.S. has very little damage. They are still performing at full capacity. Everyone is forced to buy from the U.S. Now U.S. focuses on gaining diplomatic/trade partners. They want to spread freedom and democracy (capitalism). Soviet Union wants security, protection from Germany, control over their neighbors and to spread communism. Yalta Conference – 1945 – The big 3 – Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin. They discuss post war Europe and decide to create the U.N. Soviet Union also agrees to help U.S. in the pacific. III. Cold War differences
