The kingdom of Nepal can claim the supreme Buddhist accolade of being Siddhartha Gautama’s birthplace: Lumbini. Lumbini is one of the four great Buddhist pilgrimage-places. 1,500 years after Siddhartha’s birth, when the Muslims overran northern India, this Himalayan kingdom became a sanctuary for fleeing Indian Buddhists, who brought texts, relics, and sacred artifacts with them and established a sangha in the Kathmandu Valley, which is still today dominated by the burnished Buddhist pinnacles of Swayambhu, the famous Monkey Temple.
