Thinking About Management Issues 1. What are the managerial implications of a borderless organization? 2. Can the Hofstede framework presented in this chapter be used to guide managers in a Thai hospital or a government agency in Venezuela? Explain. 3. Compare the advantages and drawbacks of the various approaches to going global. 4. What challenges might confront a Mexican manager transferred to the United States to manage a manufacturing plant in Tucson, Arizona? Will these be the same for a U.S. manager transferred to Guadalajara? Explain. 5. In what ways do you think global factors have changed the way organizations select and train managers? What impact might the Internet have on this? Explain. Log On: Internet-Based Exercise You're the manager of new market development for Ralston Purina pet foods. Because of perceived market opportunities, your company's top managers are considering whether to make a major push into Mexico, Finland, and the Philippines. One of the major issues on which they want information is the status of regional trading alliances affecting these countries. Using the Internet, research whether these countries are part of regional trading alliances. If they do belong to such an alliance, compile a separate one-page report on each alliance for your managers. The executive team would also like specific economic, political-legal, and cultural information on each country that they're considering. Again, using the Internet, compile a separate one-page report on each country covering this information. Working Together: A Team-Based Exercise Moving to a foreign country isn't easy, no matter how many times you've done it or how receptive you are to new experiences. Successful global organizations are able to identify the best candidates for global assignments, and one of the ways they do this is through individual assessments prior to assigning people to overseas facilities.
