Lecture 6 Sept 11 th , 09 Soluble Fiber - Delaying Gastric emptying is helpful treating: o Dumping syndrome: food going immediately to the intestines o Duodenal Ulcers:  o Diabetes o Appetite suppressant (spicy food?): will suppress by little bit.  - Binds to bile: less bile to absorb.  o Lower blood cholesterol. Bile is cholesterol. Fiber will bind to cholesterol and  make it unavailable for reabosorbtion and comes out as poop o Reduces colon cancer. Bile is weakly carcinogenic: we do produce material bad  for out body. The bacteria eat bile and can make it more carcinogenic.  - Examples of soluble fibers o Fruits (pectins):  where is the soluble fibers. (ex. Apple pear, peach, prunes {also  contains dihydrophenylisatin which is colon stimulant, especially when you are  constipated}) o Legumes: beans (high in protein, nutrition, fibers o Whole grains: oat bran (especially the outside that covers the oat contain high  fibers.) o Grains: other grains rich in fibers such as psyllium (husks) (included in  Metamucil) o Nuts: peanuts, walnuts (has a lot of oil so high on calories)
