Calorie (really kilocalorie): measure by the amount of heat the food produces i. Amount of heat required to raise 1 cc of water 1 degree centigrade. b. Joule: measure of work i. Amount of work done by a force of 1 Newton acting over a distance of one meter. (1Kcal = 4.2 KJoules) c. Bomb Calorimeter i. Dry food is placed in a jar. ii. Temperature of water is measured. iii. Pure oxygen is blown into a jar. iv. Spark ignites oxygen, the fuel in the food will cause explosion. v.
