Biology Class Lectures Day 3 1. Compound – two or more different chemical compounds bonded together Type of chemical bonds. 1. Ionic bonds – bond formed by donation of an –e by 1 atom an acceptance of an –e by another. a. When placed in water ionic bonds will ionize or form ion. b. Medium 2. Covalent bonds – 2 types. Sharing of electrons a. Non-polar covalent bond – involves equal sharing of e-. b. Polar covalent bonds – unequal sharing of e-. c. Strongest i. Hydrophilic – H2O soluble 1. must have a charge. 2. Ionic or covalent. ii. Hydrophobic – H2O hating 1. Molecules contain no charge. 2. Non-polar covalent. 3. Hydrogen Bonds – between 2 polar covalent molecules. a. Between positive of 1 molecule and negative of another molecules. b. Gives H2O most of its properties. c. Weakest Properties of H20 1. High heat capacity.
