6 NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY P2.6 STUDY OF PLANETARY GEAR TRAINS 1.1OBJECTIVES The objectives of this laboratory are to: Study the kinematic fundamentals of epicyclic gear drives. Select and design a gear unit for relatively simple requirements. 1.2INTRODUCTION Gears have always been considered as a useful device by engineers since the early days. Due to its’ ability to multiply force, it has been used as a device to carry heavy loads. It was only till the Industrial revolution in the 18 th Century that the use of gears was widely used. Today, modern technology has improved the efficiency of gear drives through the use of new materials 1 . Gears are generally used for one of the reasons, To change direction of rotation. Increasing or decreasing speed of rotation. To move rotational motion to a different axis. Keep rotational between two axes synchronized 2 . There are many types of gears available today. Different types of situation will require different types of gears or a combination of them. One of the more useful gears is the epicyclic gears or planetary gear trains. An important application of the planetary gearsets is in an automatic transmission. This report will delve into the mechanics and fundamental concepts of the planetary gear trains. 1.3 FUNDAMENTALS OF EPICYCLIC GEARS This chapter will be explaining the different types of gear trains, the concept of velocity ratio and design considerations for a gear set. 3.1.
