Law- 10-14-09   From "ought" to "is" - Normative questions about law -Empirical questions about law. Legal realism, critical legal studies  Two Methodologies Variables-orientation- interested in characterizing law as a kind of  countries develop diff. approaches to law. The result of other kinds  of  social variables.  cause/effect society. Society effects law and law effects society. If there is more  informal social control the need for legal social control is less.  law works Objectivity- no bias in testing hypothesis and the results. Neutral data  gathering, that is a good measure.  Pursuit of scientific "laws" (e.g. "the law of gravity")- theoretical  model to see what aspects of law dictate diff.  Interpretive (humanities) Meaning-orientation- how to understand an object of inquiry, figure
