Clarity and Chlorophyll in LSU Lakes Problem Biotic and abiotic factors may determine the carrying capacity of that community (Wischusen, 2008). The purpose of this experiment is to find the relationship between the biotic factor, chlorophyll, and the abiotic factor, clarity, in the different LSU lakes. Hypothesis The alternate hypothesis is that the amount of chlorophyll affects the clarity of the lake. The null hypothesis is that the amount of chlorophyll has no effect on the clarity of the lake. Methods Water clarity is composed of two parts: (1) true color, the amount of materials that are dissolved in the water; and (2) turbidity, the amount of materials suspended in the water, with algae being a major component of turbidity (“Water clarity – Understanding”). Water clarity also determines how far into the water sunlight can penetrate, which in turn determines the amount of autotrophs that can thrive in the lake (Wischusen, 2008).
