Physics 9B Study Sheet Midterm 2 The exam will cover chapters 14.1 -14.3, 35-36. You should spend half your time understanding the theory and half working problems. The problems are a very important part of preparing for an exam, and these should include problems that have not been assigned. The exam will involve thinking NOT MEMORIZATION ; therefore, you should get a good night's sleep before the exam and come prepared to think. CRAMMING WILL NOT HELP . Chapter 35 Be able to define or state as the case may be: a) phase. b) path length. c) coherent source. d) constructive and destructive interference. e) thin film interference. f) Newton's rings. g) Michelson interferometer. Know and understand: 1) how path difference Î x leads to a phase difference ƒ = kÎx . 2) how phase difference governs interference. 3) the conditions for minima, primary maxima, and secondary maxima. 4) how reflection generates a phase difference (boundary with a denser medium, or a less dense). 5) how a non-reflective coating works (thin film interference).
