Tyler Dean Block 2 Evaporative Cooling of Water and Various Alcohols Abstract This experiment is to observe the change in temperature between water and different types of alcohol. The prediction was that if humans were to sweat alcohol, then they would cool down quicker than sweating water. We used temperature probes that were put in and taken out of the test groups and observed the temperature over time. The results indicated that it would actually cool humans down faster if they sweated alcohol because alcohol has a lower boiling temperature and evaporates faster. Introduction This lab has to do with many scientific factors. One of them is evaporative cooling . Evaporative cooling is the cooling that happens when a liquid evaporates. The energy needed for the transformation is known as the heat of evaporation . Another variable that is different between water an alcohol is the boiling point . The boiling point is lower in water than alcohol which makes it able to carry more heat away from the skin and in turn helps regulate the body temperature. This lab helps us test the speed at which the test groups evaporate and we can answer our question and test our hypothesis. Problem Would it be better if we sweated out alcohol rather than water? Hypothesis If we measure the change in temperature of water and alcohol, then the alcohol will cool the fastest. Materials Logger Pro LabQuest2 or LabPro interface 4 stainless steel temperature probes water 3 different alcohols 4 beakers (for liquids)
