Module 21 Panic disorder – occurs during late adolescent/early adulthood. Panic attack Stress- Primary appraisal-(getting married, car accident) Harm/loss elicits neg emotion such as fear,depression, anxiety(bike accident) Threat (giving blood) neg emotion, anger, fear Challenge (working hard in college but have to take 2 more classes) –pos emot eagerness/excitement, less stressful than the other 2 If u ask sum1 on a 1 st date, u may feel threatened by the possibility of being rejected yet challenged by the chance to prove urself. Galcanic skins response Threat app levels of stress more than challenge app level. Fight-flight –activate it wen faced w/potentially dangerous physical stimulis(mugger, accident, police siren, snake, threaten)also exposure to poten bothersome or stressful psych stimuli(worrying abt exam, impatient, arguing w/some1, wait in line, angry over putdown) 1)Appraisal physically or psych threatening stimuli can trigger the ight-flight reponse n eng emotion 2)Hypothalamus activates 2 stress- related responses;it triggers the pituitary gland to release a s fightin hormone called ACTH, activates the sympathetic division of the autonomicNS 3)Sympathetic division activated by the hypo, triggers a number of phys responses that make up the fight-flight response, which prepares the body to deal w/poten threatening physical or psych stimuli, parasym activated buy hypo, returns the body to a more calm,
