Peer pressure, cheap drinks at student bars and the freedom of living away from home allcontribute to the choices students make. It is important for students to be aware of thedangers associated with drinking using informed decisions about the way they live their lifeand care for their health. Drinking in moderation is an enjoyable and usually harmless whenit comes to socialising. However, some students never know when to stop or is unaware ofthe amount of alcohol they are taking in therefore are likely to binge drink. And this canaffect the physical, social and academic affects of students.Facts and figuresAccording to (drinkaware.co.uk) Research shows that 52% of male students and 43%of female students drink more than the Government’s recommended guidelines (3-4units a day for men and 2-3 for women).According to the department of health (2007) Young people aged 16–24 yearsconsume more than twice the recommended sensible drinking limit then older agedadults. Men aged 16–24, drink at 30% at a harmful level, compared with just 4% ofthose aged 65 or over. 16–24-year-old women, drink at 22% of a harmful amount ofalcohol on at least one day in the preceding week, compared with only 1% of womenin the oldest age group.Lastly, young people aged 18–24, those who binge drink were far more likely toadmit to committing criminal or disorderly behaviours during or after drinking 63%more than other regular drinkers. This shows that alcohol really does affect behaviours in young adults and it is important tomake students aware of the risk they’re undertaking when drinking.
