Chapter 8- Leisure Lifestyles•What is lifestyle? •‘a distinctive set of shared patterns of tangible behaviour organized around a set of coherent interests or social conditions or both, and can be explained and justified by a set of related values, attitudes, and orientations and which, under certain conditions, becomes the basis for a separate, common social identity for its participants’•How is this studied by leisure specialists and academics?•Mobilization of resources•Connection to the ‘social world’ of the leisure activity•Basis for personal and social identification•Costs and rewards of participation

Leisure forms•Serious Leisure- individuals make career on acquiring special skills, knowledge and experience•Amateurs •Hobbyists•Volunteers•Casual Leisure- short term, intrinsically rewarding, fun, no skills•Project-based Leisure – short term, requires planning and some skills
Serious leisure •Serious leisure is the systematic pursuit of an amateur, hobbyist, or volunteer activity that participants find so substantial, interesting, and fulfilling that they typically launch themselves on a (leisure) career centred on acquiring and expressing its special skills, knowledge, and experience.•Why use the term ‘serious’.. Isn’t that opposite to leisure, fun, enjoyment, etc? Isn’t career a work word? How does it fit the definition?
Qualities of Serious Leisure •the need to persevere in the activity;•The opportunity to follow a leisure career in the endeavor; •Participants put forth a significant personal effort using their skills; knowledge, training;•There are durable benefits experienced by the participants;•There is a unique ethos (culture);•Participants identify strongly with their chosen pursuits.
Serious Leisure •Amateurs:•Found in art, science, sport and entertainment•What is their relationship to or with professionals?
