Karna Upadhyay AFP Assignment 2 September 7, 2009 Manifest Destiny and the Monroe Doctrine Although it seems doubtful to me that the initial intent of the Monroe Doctrine was to lay a basis for the concept of “manifest destiny”, it does seem that throughout time the Monroe Doctrine has been used as such. My understanding of the Monroe Doctrine is that essentially, the United States was to be the sole power of the western hemisphere, and should remain so. Any attempts of European nations to colonize or create their own sphere of influence within the Americas would be perceived as a direct affront to the United States and treated as such. It almost seemed like Monroe was trying to say that the United States would stay out of European affairs as long as the European countries stayed out of the affairs of North and South America. Not so much that the United States considered itself the ruler of all the America’s, just that we were against colonization, especially when it expanded the power of nations already more
