Multiple Alleles A diploid genotype has two copies of every gene. However, there is no limit on the number of alleles of a gene that may occupy a locus. Multi-allelic loci are common. ABO and other blood groups are well-known examples. Loci within the major histocompatibility complex are an extreme exception (extreme example of multi-allelism).

Multiple Alleles Complex genotype phenotype relationships emerge with multiple alleles. Complete Dominance Dominant Negative Incomplete Dominance (heterozygote phenotype is intermediate between corresponding homozygotes). Codominance (Both alleles are fully expressed) Null allele (always fully recessive) For one allele, the dominance relationships may vary with respect to other alleles at the locus.
