Unformatted text preview: Virginia Lieu Paul Dobryden German R5A October 22, 2009 The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari Response I thought The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was a really good movie. Because of the lack of speaking with emphasis on music and storyline, the movie really allowed me to think and carefully observe. This would have been near impossible with the more recent films that bombard us with special effects, explosions, and distractions. It allowed me to really pay attention to the focus on changes and contrasts in lighting and music and the camera transitions and distances. The lighting in the movie played a really big part because it showed us where to focus our attention. Throughout the movie, Jane was always displayed in a very bright white light; she always wore white and even her bed was completely white. In the beginning of the movie, as she walked through the dark dense forest, she stood out like a spotlight. This might emphasize how Jane played in an integral part of the plot; she was the reason why Cesar disobeyed Caligari and fell to his death.
