Sarah Kugler HD 344 Section Discussion Issues Week 2 The Maternal Lifestyle Study: Effects of Substance Exposure During Pregnancy on Neurodevelopmental Outcome in 1-month-Old Infants. (Lester) Issues: - While the study is effective in outlining the guidelines/rubric for which the infants are being judged on, I can’t help but feel that the four A measures (arousal, attention, affect and action) could be highly influenced by the individual personality amongst the infants themselves rather than effects due to the behavior of their pregnant mothers. (This argument could be used to critique many of the other infant behaviors recorded by the researchers in this study as well). I feel it’s hard to extrapolate whether these behavioral characteristics share a cause-effect relationship based on maternal lifestyle and infant development. I am perplexed as to whether more quantitative data would prove more persuasive and irrefutable in such a study rather than such qualitative data.
