Organic Chemistry (CHEM211) Professor Bradbury, Jeff by Robert D. Rooney August 24 th , 2009 Lab #1 Purification of Acetanilide by Recrystallization Purpose : A mixture of acetanilide and water soluble solutes will be purified by recrystallization from an aqueous solution. Abstract: Separation of a solute from a mixture through recrystallization can be achieved by means of exploiting the varying solubility of a mixture's constituent species with temperature. Data Table 1. Reagents to be used. Chemical Name Structure Physical Data Safety Disposal Acetanilide, C 6 H 5 NH(COCH 3 ) Density : 1.219 g/cm³ Solubility in water : 1 g/185 mL at 22°C Melting Point : 112–114°C (233–239 °F) May cause eye,  skin, and  respiratory tract  irritation. May  cause allergic skin  reaction. May be  harmful if  swallowed. May  cause blood  abnormalities. Not hazardous. Dispose of down a sink with lots of water. Water, H 2 O Density : 1.0 g/cm³ Melting Point : 0 °C, 32 °F Reactive with group 1 compounds. Not hazardous. Dispose of down a sink. Note: Pure acetanilide has a melting point of 113.7°C Data Table 2. Mass of Crude Acetanilide (mixture) Mass of Container + Mixture Mass of Container Mass of Crude Acetanilide Mixture Data Table 3. Drawing(s) of Apparatus('s) used: Procedure : 1) Weigh a 2.0 gram sample of crude acetanilide in a 100 mL Erlenmeyer Flask. 2) Add just enough distilled water to form a saturated solution. 3) Add a magnetic stir bar. 4) Heat and stir on a hotplate/stirrer. Bring to a gentle boil. Note : substances should dissolve; if solutes remain add hot distilled water drop-wise until sediments dissolve. Observation
