PROBLEM SET 2 ECE 713 Spring Quarter 2006 Assigned: April 10th Quiz: April 19th in class Instructor: Joel Johnson Problem 1 An engineer is trying to determine the noise figure of a very sensitive receiver already con- nected to a receiving antenna. To reduce the effects of any external noise, the engineer orients the antenna so that it observes only cold space with the cosmic background brightness temperature of 2.9 K. Assume the system operates with a bandwidth of 1 MHz. (a) Assuming the antenna is 100% efficient, find the antenna temperature and the external noise power input to the receiver assuming the antenna and receiver are matched. (b) If the receiver has a noise figure F=1.01, find the “excess noise” contributed by the receiver at the receiver input. (c) If the engineer assumes that all of the noise of parts (a) and (b) is internal noise, what noise figure is obtained for the receiver? (d) Repeat parts (a) through (c) assuming the antenna has an efficiency of 99.9% and a physical temperature of 283 K. (e) Repeat parts (a) through (c) assuming the noise figure of the receiver is 2 instead of 1.01, and the antenna is 100% efficient.
