GEOL 108: Rivers and Floods 18:41 Why important?  Soil is losing nutrients  Water transport is cheap compared to other forms Superfloods: unnatural is when we put ourselves in floodplains (they’re supposed  to flood!)- New Orleans is below sea level and in a bad place Dams and channeling of rivers are unnatural—river takes on unbelievable  dimensions We’re losing our beaches, the sand comes from rivers, moves to ocean Beaches: deposition equal to erosion, we’re holding back sand behind a dam, so  erosion > deposition Rivers have diff. parts, erosion is great Go down river Balance of nature: unbalanced at top, balance at bottom  Discharge is amount of water moving past a given point (like how long it takes  your bathtub to fill up)  Stream X section: build a tavern YOU WANNA PUT IT ON THE POINT BAR Streams move all of the landslide debris downstream
