Monika Poshkaite Writing Assignment #1 Functions of a Cow in “Sunbeams” A symbol of a cow in “Sunbeams” means many things. A cow is a domestic animal, but what does it represent in writing? When one mentions a cow, a sudden thought of a farm animal will come to mind. In Greek astrology, the cow represents a zodiac sign, Taurus which is a symbol of stubborn behavior and power. The most important theme in “Sunbeams” is Dvora Baron’s repetitive use of symbols to convey her message further. Baron explores the lightness and darkness of humanity, especially in a way she transmits the symbolism of a cow in her story. An orphan girl’s husband buys a milch cow at a neighboring farm. It is no accident that cow is of reddish tint, as the sun shines on its fur, it becomes golden- just like the girl’s hair that she touched, because it showed up as a “golden cloud” for her. Another pattern of cow symbolism is that the young cow had just calved for the first time and was struggling to turn back and return to the calf that she left behind at the farm.
