Karna Upadhyay Conflict/Cooperation WSJ 2/18/03 N. Korea may shun armistice On Tuesday, North Korea announced it might renounce the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War. The reasons, according to a spokesman, are that the US is plotting an attack on them. The spokesman said that the US is steadily building up military reinforcements in preparation for a pre-emptive attack on North Korea. Although nothing is for sure, North Korea’s backing out of the armistice would put even more strain on the already uneasy peace in the region. If North Korea does back out of the armistice, it would be just one of the latest moves

Prior to this announcement, North Korea stated its intent to restart its nuclear programs, which is obviously of great worry to the US and many other countries. This article reminds me of “the great sword hunt” ordered by the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan. He ordered that all the peasants give up their weapons. He did this to help stop any possible revolts by the peasant class and to stabilize the government....
