THEMES By Karna Upadhyay The Good Earth is a book full of themes, some obvious and some not. Wang Lung is confronted with many moral and physical dilemmas in which he displays normal human characteristics. Since the author writes the book over the span of Wang’s adult life, we are able to see common themes that appear in everyday life, as well as themes that occur because of the culture that Wang Lung is immersed in. As the book’s title implies, the Good Earth is a book that often revolves around the land and nature. The land is always the family’s savior in bad times, but in the end, Wang is the only one who can realize it. For a portion of the book, even Wang is estranged from his beloved land, which is most clear when he moves to the House of Hwang, making he and his family not only physically apart from their fields but mentally. Much like nature itself, Wang’s life seems to have it’s own seasons. He starts out with nothing, gradually becomes rich, then gradually loses it all again.
