123 Paragraph By Karna Upadhyay Hemingway’s code is more than evident in The Old Man And The Sea; it’s a major theme throughout the entire book. In order to be a hero according to Hemingway, you need several attributes, all of which Santiago possesses. The first attribute Santiago possesses is endurance. Santiago not only shows it in his three-day battle with the marlin, but also in going out to fish everyday even though it had been 84 days since he had caught a fish.

Although during the battle with the marlin, Santiago was extremely fatigued and could have let him go for the sake of his own life and body, he decides to keep fighting through the bad odds. The third attribute shown is grace under pressure. A lesser man would have cursed the marlin and the ocean for giving him such pain; instead, Santiago loves and respects them for their strength and determination....
