SUMMARY Sherman Alexie’s book, Indian Killer , is about a serial killer who terrorizes Seattle. This serial killer is nicknamed “Indian Killer” for his scalping of white men and leaving two owl feathers behind--the owl, long considered the messenger of death in Native American mythology. After more white people end up being murdered, Seattle goes into a mass hysteria, instigated by a right-wing radio personality, Truck Schultz. Truck believes that Native Americans have had it way too easy for far too long and tells the people of Seattle to take charge once again. Because of these racist views, Native Americans in Seattle are being shunned, ridiculed, and even attacked. This leaves the already disturbed main character, John Smith, in a strange mental condition. Smith is an Indian that was adopted by a white couple, Olivia and Daniel Smith, when he was just a baby. He had a typical middle-class childhood being raised in a nearly all white community, but while growing up, he became more and more distant. He
