4 Calcium in nerve action A nerve impulse is transmitted from one cell to a muscle cell through the use of calcium ions and neurotransmitters. The nerve impulse triggers the opening of calcium channels allowing Ca 2+ ions to migrate into the cell. The presence of Ca 2+ ions triggers release of neurotransmitters (acetylcholine ACh) into the synapse. The neurotransmitters collect on the other side of the gap and trigger a contraction.
