Purpose: Synthesize and purify zinc iodide by reacting elemental zinc and iodine. Find the empir- ical formula of zinc iodide. Evaluate the validity of the Law of Mass Conservation. Ob- serve chemical reversibility. Procedure: Part 1: 1.) A dry test tube was massed. 2.) About 2.00 g elemental zinc was placed in the dry test tube and was massed by difference. 3.) A dry test tube and beaker were massed. 4.) About 2.00 g elemental iodine was placed into the test tube/beaker combination and was massed by difference. The iodine was added to the test tube with the zinc. 5.) 6 drops 6M acetic acid was added to 10 mL of deionized water. 6.) 5 mL of this solution was added to the test tube containing the zinc and iodine. It was stirred for 10 minutes. 7.) A separate test tube with a boiling stone was massed. 8.) The liquid in the zinc/iodine solution was decanted into the test tube
