Gabrielle Citrino NS 1150 Prof. Levitsky September 16, 2009 Assignment #1 Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. It affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with oth- ers. Today, it is estimated that one in every 150 children is diagnosed with autism, and an estimated 1.5 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide are living with it. Autism is a spectrum disorder with a variety of options for treatment for individu- als across the lifespan. While there is no cure for autism, therapies, educational and be- havioral interventions and certain medications are sometimes used to decrease impuls- ivity and help the child develop social and speech skills. Individuals with autism may ex- hibit low tolerance or allergies to certain foods or chemicals. Though not necessarily a specific cause of autism, these food intolerances or allergies may contribute to behavi- oral issues. The GFCF (gluten-free, casein-free) elimination diet has recently been ad- vocated as a means to improve the behavior of children living with autism. Named the
